News from the OAPO/Monashee 50+ Club – September 20, 2024

Our first meeting, after summer break was on Thursday September 12th. We had invited guest speakers Tony Clayton from Lumby Fire Department and Grant Hudson, RDNO Training Officer. With over 60 years of experience between them they were a wealth of practical knowledge.

Tony introduced the background of the Lumby Fire Department, the types of trucks and equipment, and the types of services they provide. This department covers an area of 190 square kilometers and one of the largest areas. A basic outline of recruiting, training, junior fire fighters and programs was briefly explained and the on-call, volunteer and pay standards while on duty.

What fire is and the three elements that is needed to start and sustain it was gone over as well as an overview of fire extinguisher types and range. One of the biggest revelations to us was properties of lithium batteries especially in our cell phones.  Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors was another lesson study with testing and quantity as well as location of them. We were reminded about testing them twice a year and having our furnaces checked professionally every fall. Wood burning stoves and furnaces was briefly touched on and suggesting the chimneys cleaned and inspected regularly.

One of the fire hazards we didn’t expect was the use of cheap and flimsy extension cords and plugins. Only get and use good quality and reputable cords and inspect them often. Candles left burning and unattended was another risk that was called attention to.

A good neighbour policy was strongly suggested with an awareness of who is home and when. A printed window sign was made available with HELP on red and flipside of OK in green for notifying to a passerby when assistance is needed. There were many handouts left out for taking and a wealth of information, especially on evacuation readiness and procedures.

They went over a few of the call-out stories of fire scenes and the need for everyone to stay well away from the fire to allow everyone to do their jobs.  A question and answer followed with our heart-felt appreciation for the presentation as well as gratitude for their service in our community.
