The Lumby & District Wildlife Association is proud to celebrate another successful Fishing Forever event, held on May 9 at Mabel Lake Campground.
The annual event brings together adults with diverse abilities, seniors, caregivers, volunteers, and community organizations for a memorable day of fishing, learning, and connection in the outdoors. Participants attended from organizations including Kindale Developmental Association, Canadian Mental Health Association, and other local care facilities throughout the region.
This year, 64 participants and caregivers took part in the event, enjoying a day filled with hands-on fishing instruction, fresh air, friendship, and a community BBQ lunch. Volunteers from the Lumby & District Wildlife Association helped participants learn the basics of fishing, while also sharing techniques with those who already had experience on the water.
One of the highlights of this year’s event was the excitement of participants successfully catching fish — a first for many involved. In total, four fish were caught throughout the day, creating unforgettable moments for participants, caregivers, and volunteers alike.
“This event is about far more than fishing,” said Co-Chair Teresa Durning-Harker. “It’s about inclusion, confidence, connection, and giving people the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a supportive and welcoming environment. Seeing participants catch fish this year made the day even more rewarding for everyone involved.”
The association would like to extend sincere thanks to all participating organizations, caregivers, volunteers, and community supporters who helped make the event possible. Special appreciation goes to Mabel Lake Campground for hosting the event, and to the British Columbia Wildlife Federation for their continued support and provision of Fishing Forever program resources and assets.
