The weather was a little cooler at the market this past Saturday, luckily for us the thunderstorm waited until later at night, we never want to get caught in a thunderstorm with lightning with all our tents and trees around us we could be in trouble. Every year I send out the 30 30 rule to all the vendors to be safe in case lightning is near us. I thought I would share it with you as well.

The 30/30 Rule
The 30-30 rule is a guideline for lightning safety that advises individuals to seek shelter if they see lightning and hear thunder within 30 seconds, and to wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before leaving shelter.
Understanding the 30-30 Rule
1. Count the Seconds: When you see a flash of lightning, start counting the seconds until you hear thunder. If the time is 30 seconds or less, it indicates that the storm is close enough to pose a danger, and you should seek shelter immediately.
2. Seek Shelter: The safest places to be during a thunderstorm are inside a substantially constructed building or a metal-topped vehicle. Avoid staying outside, under trees, or near tall objects that could attract lightning.
3. Wait 30 Minutes: After the last clap of thunder, wait for at least 30 minutes before leaving your shelter. This waiting period helps ensure that the storm has passed and reduces the risk of being struck by lingering lightning.
Additional Lightning Safety Tips
• Avoid Conductive Materials: Stay away from electrical appliances, plumbing, and anything that can conduct electricity while indoors.
• Do Not Use Landline Phones: Avoid using landline phones during a storm, as lightning can travel through phone lines.
• Stay Low: If you are caught outside and cannot reach shelter, avoid high ground and
• stay away from water and metal objects.
By following the 30-30 rule and these additional safety tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of injury during thunderstorms. Remember, no place outside is safe during a thunderstorm. Always prioritize seeking shelter when you observe lightning and hear thunder.
