Welcome to Colleen’s Corner. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.
I remember being in the house where I grew up, it was during a holiday when the cooking took hours to prepare. Christmas and Thanksgiving. My mom would of course out do herself, with fresh baked buns, desserts, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, and of course the main dish, turkey and/or ham. As soon as you walked into the house out of the kitchen would be this wonderful aroma of food being tenderly cooked with love through out the day. The whole house would be filled with the scents that would make your mouth water in anticipation for hours until the meal was finally ready, and you got to sit down to eat. There was always a lot of people at these meals. With family and friends that gathered for these two holidays some that we hadn’t seen for awhile. My mom was a great cook. The food was always extremely tasty with plenty of leftovers for us and the company to take some home.
At these meals whether it was Christmas or Thanksgiving each person at the table had to say what they were grateful or thankful for no matter what it was before we ate.
After the meal was over my two sisters and I would do the dishes, and boy after a meal like that there were a lot of dishes to be done. While we were doing the dishes some of the people that ate too much turkey would be having a nap in the living room. Once the dishes were done, we would all sit down to play games, sometimes it was board games and sometimes it would be cards.
There were times when we would go to someone else’s place as well. And once again we would walk into that house smelling delicious and we knew we would be in for a great treat, partly because we knew the meal would of course be fantastic as during those two holidays no matter who the cook was, they would always out do themselves. The other great part of going to someone else’s place was that my sisters and I did not have to do the dishes. Instead, the kids that lived in the houses we would visit for these holidays would have the chore of doing what seemed like a million dishes to do.
But just like at home after the dishes were done the games began.
When I left home, I too would have family and friends over on the special holidays although it wasn’t as glorious as my moms and the family friends was. After my mom passed away, I still did a few big meals, but eventually I stopped having the big meals for people, it just didn’t seem like much fun anymore and it got very costly. Although if asked Tim and I will go out for the delicious dinners, and these days a lot of the dinners are potluck which is my favorite way to have a meal, so many different flavors to choose from.
But no matter where I am, I always remember to say or think what I grateful or thankful for; today I am grateful for the memories I have of my mom cooking up those delicious meals and the good times I was able to have with her.
