Seed Collection

I Bought Some Bird Seed, Does Anyone Know How Long It Takes To Grow A Bird

I just finished reading a book written by Bob Woodward called ‘Rage’ and of course it’ s about Trump. This book covers his first term through COVID and just before he starts being ousted by Joe Biden. At this time over 40 million were unemployed and 130,000 had died of the Corona Virus, which he said would just go away as he failed to listen to the experts who warned him of the dire situation the USA and other countries around the world. The USA had one of the highest death rates in the world.

It covers how he dealt with his White House staff and the fact that he didn’t trust them and often during meetings just yelled and screamed at them to the point they were terrified of him and how they capitulated to whatever he wanted and his pathetic ego to protect themselves and their jobs and positions.

It also covers his relationships with foreign leaders and his bullying way with them. Even his son in law Jared Kushner said trying to understand Trump was like trying to understand Alice in Wonderland. Many of the people who had to deal with him or tried to help felt Trump was an unstable threat to their country. Thank heavens this is last term, Right? This book is a great read and based on facts that the author gathered in the form of interviews, diaries kept, news and other media and has documented it well.

The BC seed gathering conference will be held November 27 and 28th in Harrison Hot Springs this year and will be covering seed collection from growers, farmers and researchers. This should be an interesting and educational event. Practically all annual flowers and vegetables can be grown with the seeds you gather from plants that you love. Dry seeded plants should be gathered on a dry day when they are truly mature and the seed heads have turned brown. Wet seeded plants like Tomato and Cucumber should be well ripened and past the usual mature stage for consumption. The seeds from the wet seeded group should be scooped out and put in jars with a little water and allowed to ferment for up to a week. Rinse these seeds well then treat as you do with other seeds by drying on paper towels or screens until completely dry.

Always collect your seeds from your most healthy plants and the seeds you collect, over time, will be more adapted to your local environment making them more productive and resilient. Beans and Peas should be left on the vine until dry and brittle, Peppers should be left on the plant until they reach their mature colour and are well wrinkled before harvesting. Once really dried well store your seeds in glass jars and sealed envelopes in a sealed container in a cool, dark dry area. Don’t forget to label your jars and envelopes with the date harvested, and the name of the plant before you store. If there is any sign of mold throw them out and start over.

Many plants cross pollinate like Squash if you grow several varieties and you may not like what you grow next year. With annual flowers you should be gathered and stored in the same manner. Petunia seeds cross pollinate like Squash and although you will get a lot of nice plants from these seeds you will also get some really ugly ones.

Happy Gardening!
