National Love & Kindness Day

Observed annually on July 27, National Love & Kindness Day is a relationship awareness day dedicated to a simple yet powerful message: love should never hurt—at any age.

Established in 2017 by Rosie Aiello and her daughter, Sunny, founders of The Love Is Kind Network, the day honours their courageous journey to safety after escaping an abusive relationship. Their story serves as a reminder that everyone deserves relationships built on kindness, respect, trust, and compassion.

For older adults and seniors, National Love & Kindness Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of healthy relationships and personal well-being. Whether with a spouse, partner, family member, friend, or caregiver, every relationship should foster dignity, safety, and mutual respect.

While many people think of abuse as physical violence, older adults may also experience emotional, verbal, psychological, financial, or neglectful forms of abuse. These behaviours can be difficult to recognize and may occur within families, intimate relationships, or caregiving situations. No one should feel controlled, isolated, threatened, or taken advantage of.

The day encourages seniors, their families, and their communities to learn the signs of abuse and to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Creating supportive environments where older adults feel heard, valued, and respected is essential. Family members, neighbours, friends, and service providers all have a role to play in helping prevent abuse and ensuring seniors can live safely and with dignity.

In Canada, elder abuse and intimate partner violence continue to affect older adults in every community. Raising awareness, encouraging open conversations, and connecting people with support services are important steps toward protecting the rights, independence, and well-being of seniors.

National Love & Kindness Day is also a celebration of the positive impact kindness can have on our lives. A friendly visit, a phone call, a helping hand, or simply taking time to listen can make a meaningful difference. Small acts of compassion help strengthen connections, reduce loneliness, and remind people that they are valued and cared for.

This July 27, take a moment to celebrate kindness, strengthen meaningful relationships, and remember that everyone—regardless of age—deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, compassion, and love that is truly kind.
