Chuck’s Men’s Shed Story
Recently, a practicum student with Whitevalley Community Resource Centre spent time learning about the Lumby Men’s Shed and speaking with several of its members. The hope was to better understand what draws men to the shed and how the organization contributes to their lives and the community. While every member has a different story, a common theme emerged: the Men’s Shed provides a place for connection, purpose and belonging. We are excited to share a three-part series of Men’s Shed stories.
For Chuck, becoming involved with the Lumby Men’s Shed was the result of a chance encounter.
While travelling with his wife, the couple found themselves staying at the Lumby campground. During their visit, Chuck noticed the picnic tables and learned they had been built by members of the Lumby Men’s Shed.
As someone who enjoys tinkering and working with his hands, his curiosity was immediately sparked. That curiosity led him to attend the shed and meet its members. What he discovered was far more than a place to work on projects.
“It’s been fantastic,” Chuck said.
Looking back, he describes the experience as a matter of serendipity. A simple conversation at a campground eventually led him to a group that has become an important part of his life.
The projects are rewarding, but for Chuck, the greatest benefit has been the people.
“I feel like I’ve met some of the best guys ever here,” he said.
He has watched the shed grow and develop over time and appreciates the way members work together as a team. Whether they are building, repairing or taking on community projects, there is a shared sense of purpose that keeps people coming back.
What stands out most to Chuck is the genuine care members show for one another. He recalls a time when he hadn’t been around for a while and fellow members reached out to check on him. It was a simple gesture, but one that demonstrated the strong sense of community that exists within the group.
For Chuck, what began as a chance discovery while passing through town has become a source of purpose, friendship and connection. It’s proof that sometimes the most meaningful opportunities are the ones we never planned to find.
