In the 1960’s, Lumby’s truck drivers wanted to send a message to Vernon’s merchants about the importance of Lumby’s forest industry on the Okanagan economy. In those days, wages were paid with a paper cheque. The local truckers had warned Lumby’s Bank of Nova Scotia to have a huge supply of $2.00 bills on hand to cover the cheques coming in. On Saturday, loaded logging trucks from Lumby were parked down the centre of Barnard Avenue to honour National Forest Products week. It wasn’t long before Vernon’s cash registers were overflowing with $2.00 bills. Great work truckers – clever way to deliver an important message! The paper $2.00 bill was replaced by the Toonie in 1996.
