In 1921, Bill Schunter Sr., who was 21 at the time, carried a 100-pound sack of flour from Lumby to Vernon – just to prove he was man enough to drink a beer at Lumby’s Ramshorn Pub. He made the trip in less than 4 hours and was pretty well winded when he reached Vernon.
In 1991, to commemorate Bill’s epic journey, four teams, each carrying a five-pound sack of flour ran from Hilltop, Vernon to the Lumby Hotel. The Schunter team placed third.
