Pointer's Cash Store

Moments in Time – Photos & Memories from the Lumby Museum – Banking – April 21, 2023

Pointer’s Cash Store, located at 220 Whitevale Road was owned and operated by Les and Eileen Pointer.  In 1947, Les moved a grainery from the Mabel Lake area to set up a temporary store. During this time, the Pointer family lived in a tent behind the store until the house shown in this picture was built.  In 1948, a permanent store was built.  Les and Eileen started with $95.00 worth of groceries but had no shelves for their stock nor electrical power.  Les would often deliver groceries to customers who had no transportation and there were many “down on their luck” that Les extended credit to.  With the opening of Henri’s in Lavington and Martin’s in Lumby, plus the demands of Les’s transfer service, the Pointers decided to close the shop in 1958.

Les (1922-1992) married Eileen (Acres) in 1937, and together they raised two children: Arlene and Robert.
