May Fun at the Seniors’ Drop-In

Laughter, Learning, and Connection

May brought plenty of laughter and meaningful moments to the seniors’ drop-in program. Throughout the month, we enjoyed visits from some special young guests, hosted a wellness event, went on a memorable field trip, celebrated National Pet Month, and welcomed an informative guest presenter. It has certainly been a busy month, but as they say, time flies when you are having fun!

One of the highlights this month was spending quality time with a local elementary school class. The students joined us for two separate craft sessions, bringing creativity and joy along with them. Earlier in the month, we decorated beautiful flowerpots for Mother’s Day, and two weeks later, the class returned to help us create unique wooden bookmarks. The time shared with the students has been incredibly meaningful for our seniors, and we cannot thank Mrs. Currie’s class enough for taking the time to connect with us.

We were also fortunate to partner with medical students from the University of British Columbia Okanagan to host a wellness exhibit.  The medical students set up interactive stations providing valuable information on nutrition, osteoporosis, and arthritis, and blood pressure. We hope to partner with them again in the future and look forward to an even greater turnout next time.

Earlier this month, we enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the kangaroo farm in Kelowna. Seniors spent the day meeting and petting kangaroos, sugar gliders, bunnies, and even a porcupine. We packed coolers full of food and drinks and thoroughly enjoyed a fun day together.

May is also National Pet Month, so we celebrated with a special pop-up event hosted by Fletcher’s Keep. The organization helped seniors care for their beloved pets by providing supplies such as food, toys, bedding, leashes, and dog diapers. Their support for senior pet owners was greatly appreciated.

We finished the month by welcoming the John Rudy Health Resource Centre to our drop-in program for a valuable presentation on emergency preparedness. Seniors learned practical information on how to prepare for and respond to different types of emergencies, making for an informative and engaging session.

Overall, May was filled with connection, creativity, learning, and laughter—and, most importantly, many shared smiles along the way. For more information about the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre’s seniors’ programs or volunteer opportunities, please call 250-547-8866
