BC Seniors’ Week 2026 will take place from June 1–7, celebrating the valuable contributions older adults make to communities across the province. It is also an opportunity to recognize the importance of addressing ageism and ensuring seniors are supported as they age. In 2026, the BC Seniors’ Advocate is placing a strong focus on challenging age-related stereotypes and identifying gaps in services as the senior population continues to grow.
For many older adults, having the ability to age in place is essential to maintaining independence, dignity, and quality of life. Aging in place means being able to remain in one’s own home safely and comfortably for as long as possible. Achieving this requires access to reliable supports and services tailored to the unique needs of seniors.
In rural communities like Lumby, there can be additional challenges when it comes to accessing these supports. Limited transportation options, fewer healthcare services, and increased risk of social isolation can make it more difficult for seniors to remain safely in their homes. Addressing these challenges requires a community-based approach that ensures seniors feel connected and supported.
The Whitevalley Community Resource Centre in Lumby offers programs and services designed to help seniors navigate these challenges. The Social Prescribing Community Connect program supports individuals by addressing isolation, improving mobility, and connecting them with local resources. This program helps seniors stay engaged in their community while maintaining their independence.
In addition, the Centre provides one-on-one support to help seniors access the assistance they need. This includes providing information about available services, connecting individuals to relevant programs, offering home visits, and making referrals to healthcare supports. Together, these services aim to empower seniors to live safely, independently, and with confidence in their own homes.
