Making the Most of your Doctor’s Appointments

By working closely with your doctor, you can choose the treatment option that best fits your values, beliefs, and lifestyle. Being actively involved in the decision-making process can also help you feel more confident about following through with your treatment plan and managing your overall health journey.

Building a strong working relationship with your doctor starts with clear communication. Let your doctor know what you hope to achieve from your visits. Regular, well-informed appointments can help with the early detection of underlying conditions. Staying up to date with checkups and being open and honest about your health concerns allows your doctor to understand your baseline health, monitor symptoms, and adjust treatments as needed.

To make the most of your appointments, prioritize your questions from most important to least important. Writing down your questions and concerns ahead of time can help ensure nothing is forgotten. Bring an up-to-date list of all medications you are taking, including herbal or holistic remedies, and note whether they are helping. Keeping a journal to track symptoms or changes in your health can also be very useful.

During your visit, make sure you clearly understand the information your doctor provides. Consider bringing a notebook to take notes or asking a spouse, family member, or friend to accompany you for support.

Whitevalley Community Resource Centre and the John Rudy Health Society will be facilitating a two part complimentary workshop in March to support maximizing your medical appointments and time spent with healthcare professionals.
