Love is in the Air

February has certainly kept us guessing! I would love to say that spring is in the air, but this month has been brisk. Despite the chilly temperatures, Okanagan Okie, the resident marmot at Allan Brooks Nature Centre, has predicted an early spring for 2026. We are holding onto that hopeful forecast!

In the meantime, the seniors at Whitevalley Community Resource Centre’s drop-in programs have been keeping the winter blues at bay by staying active and engaged. Our days have been filled with singing, dancing, fitness classes, and—most importantly—plenty of fellowship and laughter.

This month, we enjoyed both seated Zumba and seated Yoga. Seated Zumba is a lively, fun class where participants move to upbeat music while comfortably seated in their chairs. It is amazing how much of a workout you can get while dancing along to great tunes! Seated Yoga offers a slower pace, focusing on gentle stretching and movement to keep our bodies flexible and strong. We also enjoy playing games that are really exercise in disguise. A favourite is bean bag toss, which keeps us moving while adding a bit of friendly competition.

Twisted Strings visited our program and treated us to wonderful live music at the beginning of the month to celebrate National Singing Day on February 4th. With two fiddlers, an acoustic guitar, and a bass, they serenaded us with beautiful classical songs that had toes tapping and spirits lifted.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we watched the romantic classic Sleepless in Seattle, which brought smiles and a few happy sighs. We also created diamond dot Valentine magnets—small, sparkling crafts that everyone was able to complete during the program. On February 13th, we gathered together for an incredible roast beef dinner, sharing good food and great company.

Even though winter is still holding on, our hearts—and our drop-in lounge—are warm and full.
