Lumby Stars U11(2) Team wins the Monashee Classic!

This past weekend, both Lumby U11 hockey teams hosted players from all over the province in the Monashee Classic tournament. The U11(2) team (sponsored by Sundowner Meats) opened the weekend facing Salmon Arm (3). With support from forward Sam Ostafichuk; Atlee Reim and Jasiu Zawadzki scored singles, Jax Barg and Hayden Bartram nabbed two goals each and a hattie from Locklyn Quibell (who took home the Heart and Hustle award for the game). AP Mason McGlame was a great addition on defense to minimize offensive efforts; Lumby won the game 10-3. On Saturday Lumby met up with Williams Lake dominating 17-2; Leland Nelson, Jax Barg and Locklyn Quibell all nabbed hat tricks, Atlee Reim, Kellen Balcaen and Ruslan Viret (who took home the game’s heart and Hustle) all put 2 past the Williams Lake goal line. Stellar defense by Carson Lishman held back the attempts to get to goaltender Lucas Barker, who was rock solid in net. In their third game against Semiahmoo, Lumby continued their winning streak. The team played incredible with singles from Hayden Bartram, Kellen Balcaen and Jax Barg, two goals from Rylan Thompson with an awesome assist by AP Mason McGlame, Atlee Reim – one was assisted by Carson Lishman (who took home the Heart and Hustle award) and a hat trick from Locklyn Quibell- game final was 10-2.

Sunday morning the Pat Duke Arena was full of spectators in a nail-biting Lumby 1 vs Lumby 2 semi-final showdown (Leland Nelson and Fallon Currie took home the game Heart and Hustles). Goaltender Dawson Teagle from U11 (1) was like a wall, with only Locklyn Quibell managing to slip 2 past all the way into the third period. U11 (2) goaltender Lucas Barker stood on his head for the entire game denying most attempts by Lumby 1 for the majority of the game; this was supported by Lumby 2’s rock solid D-man Callan Church. Almost halfway through the third period Lumby 1’s AP Oliver Baines snuck one past Barker. Jasiu Zawadski answered back with a goal past Teagle, assisted by Balcaen. With the intensity rising, Lumby 1’s Fallon Currie nabbed a nice goal, assisted by Jake Hughes. This was followed by Lumby 2’s AP Arya Church giving a beauty pass to Quibell who sniped one past Lumby 1. As the clock wound down Jake Jackson from Lumby 1 added a nice goal to close the gap tighter to 4-3, which would be the game final- with Lumby 2 moving to the championship game. The final game brought Lumby 2 vs. Salmon Arm 2. The crowd tensely watched as the game progressed tit for tat with amazing goaltending from both teams keeping the score low. Locklyn Quibell and Kellen Balcaen (who was given the Heart and Hustle award for the game) managed to score 2 in the first period with Salmon Arm working hard to bring a tie game into the third. Quibell, with amazing support from his teammates, managed to clinch two more goals and finish off the game 4-2 with Lumby taking home the Monashee Classic gold! Both Lumby U11 teams would like to thank the parents, the fans, and the sponsors for making this an amazing weekend for everyone.
