Volunteering and giving back are cornerstones of what makes the Lumby community so special. Among the many residents who dedicate their time and energy, one person stands out for her passion and commitment: Kristie Wadsworth, the 2025 Lions Good Citizen of the Year. Kristie is known for her positivity, warmth, vibrancy, and her unwavering support for others, making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families throughout Lumby.
Kristie’s volunteer journey began when she joined the Lumby Parent and Tot program as a participant. She soon started volunteering with her children and eventually moved into an employment role, remaining involved for an impressive 19 years. Recognizing another community need, Kristie took the initiative to restart Lumby’s youth soccer program. The response was overwhelming—the program quickly grew, proving how valuable it was for local families. Its success eventually led the RDNO, through White Valley Parks and Recreation, to take it on permanently.
Thirteen years ago, Kristie, along with Vanda and Andrea, launched the Elves Shelves program—an affordable holiday shopping experience where children can purchase gifts for their family members. This much-anticipated annual event has become a cherished community tradition, supporting families at Christmas and contributing to several other local programs.
Kristie’s inspiration for giving back stems from her deep belief in supporting the next generation, being an involved mother, and investing in her community. She loves watching children grow, succeed, and smile, and she feels fortunate to raise her own family in a community as tight-knit and caring as Lumby.
Through her volunteer work, Kristie has developed many invaluable skills, including a deep understanding of people, and an even greater sense of patience and kindness.
For anyone feeling nervous about stepping into a volunteer role, Kristie offers simple but powerful advice: take a small step outside your comfort zone—because it truly does take a village to make a difference.
Looking ahead, Kristie hopes to continue making a positive impact in Lumby and is considering expanding her volunteer efforts to include supporting seniors, in addition to children and youth.
