Christmas in Canada is a festive season shaped by the country’s rich cultural diversity, regional customs, and strong connection to winter. While many traditions resemble those found in other Western countries, Canada’s blend of Indigenous, French, British, and immigrant influences gives the holiday its own distinct character.
Across the country, the Christmas season often begins with Advent, Christmas markets, and community festivals. Towns and cities glow with elaborate light displays, including Toronto’s Cavalcade of Lights and Vancouver’s Bright Nights. In Quebec, French-Canadian traditions remain central, especially the Christmas Eve Réveillon feast enjoyed after midnight Mass. Families gather to share favourites such as tourtière, maple treats, and festive pastries.
Atlantic Canada brings its own lively customs, from kitchen parties and Newfoundland’s mummers parades to visits from Belsnickel in German-influenced communities. Indigenous communities across Canada incorporate their own seasonal practices, including communal feasts, drumming, and gift-giving ceremonies that emphasize gratitude and togetherness.
Decorating Christmas trees, hanging stockings, exchanging gifts, and enjoying outdoor winter activities are cherished traditions nationwide. Skating, sledding, snowshoeing, and winter festivals help families embrace the snowy season, while community charity drives and food bank campaigns highlight Canadians’ strong commitment to giving back. Holiday meals vary widely, from classic turkey dinners to multicultural dishes, with butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, and shortbread cookies appearing on many dessert tables.
Here in Lumby, Whitevalley Community Resource Centre celebrated the season with our own treasured traditions alongside our wonderful seniors. We enjoyed an evening bus trip to Vernon, following John Christmas’s Christmas Light Tour for the third year in a row—complete with a surprise greeting from the Grinch at one of the brightly decorated homes. We also gathered to decorate gingerbread houses and share a beautiful turkey dinner.
