Day Light Saving Time

What Does Daylight Saving Time Mean In Vancouver?…..An Extra Hour of Rain!

Well that idiot to the south of us has done it again. One day he says that talks with Iran are going well and that aggressive action against Iran will probably not happen then the next day he’s cut loose his mighty ships and with his ally Yahoo have bombed Iran and caused a major shakeup in all the countries in the Middle East. What did Melania burn his toast that morning.

The US men’s hockey team joined the president for his big speech last week, one of the Olympic gold medalists allowed Trump to try on his gold medal and Trump kept it while tempting the olympians with delicious foods from the McDonalds that he so loves. He probably thinks they named the company after him. I taped the his big, egotistical speech but have so far been unable to watch it as I cannot stand to look at him and worse listen to his idiocy.

But let’s get on to better things like our Yards and Gardens. That was quite the wind storm last week and I’m sorry that many will have to repeat the yard work that they have already done. Although I can understand why one would want to go out to enjoy the days that have been sunny and warm I do stress that it is a little early and should be limited to a light raking of the lawn and a pick up of the limbs and branches that have fallen. Be careful of removing mulch, leaves and other materials from around small bulbs and other perennial plants in your landscaping as this can do more harm than good. Tips of bulbs just coming up like daffodils, lilies and tulips may not bloom if broken off. This also lets other pests, diseases and fungi access which may cost you the entire plant. Not to mention that if we get a hard frost (please no) it could also do severe harm. Many plants grow on the seemingly dead under growth like Lambs Ear and this will prevent growth plus the mulch also holds weeds at bay although once removed they will heartily grow back anyway. The weather for the next week will include a good bit of rain that will be mixed with some snow on the colder nights. March 8th is the spring equinox where they mess with our alarm clocks calling it Daylight Savings Time, that is this coming Sunday however the First Day Of Spring not until March 20th.

For those who cannot resist the urge to plant you can start with some herbs, petunia and any perennial seeds that you may have collected. Here are a few tips that you can use to make this a breeze. Soil temperature should be a consistent 75 degrees so place your seed trays near a source of heat or on top of your fridge. For your starting soil use a plant starting mix that has Mycorrhiza in it, this is a beneficial Fungi that will help your plants resist other fungal issues, it will enhance the structure of your soil and help with the nutrient and water uptake that will help you to grow healthy plants. This beneficial Fungi with stay with the root system on all living plants. You should deeply water your seed tray with warm water and only use warm water on them until well established. Be sure to label your trays with the names of the seeds and their planting dates. If you use domes be sure to remove them during the day to prevent damping off or mold growing on them. If you see small seedlings falling over or dying sprinkle Cinnamon on the plants as this is an organic way to stop the progress of this issue.

Happy Gardening!
