Chinese New Year

Where Can You Find A Horse With No Legs?… Where You Left It!

It’s been a hectic week all over the Province. My heart is with the families dealing with the terrible shooting in Tumbler Ridge so many deaths with most of them being very young. So many questions still unanswered and a life time of grief for the families and all who knew these children and the teacher. With a population of 2400 people I am sure no one was left untouched. I was pleased so many leaders from around the world sent messages of condolence except for Trump who I guess is showing us that the message declaring his love for Canadians has expired.

I have been watching the yard closely and am delighted to see that my daffodils are now about 3 inches tall. We have had nice weather but starting this week to drop in temperature quite chilly with a chance of snow. That would be great as we will need that moisture. This weather pattern continues for 2 weeks and the snow will change to a mix of snow and rain. If we do get some rain be very careful when outside or driving as it will freeze at night to create a skating rink for any one driving or walking on these areas.

I have been watching a lot of events going on at the Olympics in Italy. More than I’ve ever watched before and it awes and amazes me on many aspects of the breath taking speed and risks these athletes take in their sport to become some of the best athletes in the world.

This is the year of the Horse the Fire Horse to be exact. It starts on the eve of February 17th . and it continues until March 3rd. It has some unusual rules for the First day such as not washing your hair or clothes no sweeping or taking out the trash. One should avoid using sharp objects like scissors or knives. There should be no arguing or crying. One should also avoid taking naps or eating porridge or wearing black or white clothing. These actions will sweep away good luck, cut off prosperity and invite misfortune.

The fortunes that come with the year of the Horse include intense energy and passion, independence and ambition, bravery, strength with fast paced action for those who have their birthdays of the Fire Horse these include people born in 1930, 42, 54, 66, 78 and 1990. 2002 and 14 as well

Certain plants like Peonies, Lilies in vibrant colours are a good balance for the energetic and forceful nature of this sign, Chrysanthemums have been very popular in Chinese History and are highly revered. Branches with the flowers of Peach, Plum, Cherry trees should be placed by your doors this also includes Pussy Willow. Marigolds are linked with wealth, good fortune and radiates cheer and positive energy. Much different than the Zodiac and planting by the light of the moon in all stages. This I will cover next week. It’s still much too early to plant most seeds for your garden other than Rosemary which takes a good month to sprout. Very soon more seeds can be planted. I will cover that next week as well.

I hope you had a wonderful long weekend!

Happy Gardening!
