On Saturday, 24 residents of Cherryville received free training on wildfire safety, prescribed burning, trench digging, hose deployment, and land stewardship under the skillful supervision and instruction of Rider Ventures Ltd.
This was the 9th annual S100 training session hosted in the Cherryville community through The Cherry Ridge Management Committee/Community Forest. Since 2018, this small community has come a long way in its ability to respond to wildfires, now owning a bush truck and developing a 2000-square-foot Fire Watch Building operated by the newly established Fire Watch Society. Thank you to the Cherry Ridge Management Committee for initiating wildfire resiliency training that prepares our communities when it matters most. Almost 300 residents have been trained in the last 9 years.
“Shout out to the community of Cherryville for its dedication to protecting the North Okanagan against wildfires. This success is the result of many years of hard work from community volunteers.” – Area Director, Jim Johnson.
