Marilyn Hornell (Charles Bloom graduating class of 1976) along with her Kamloops volleyball team were inducted into the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday April 11th, 2026.
After finishing college Marilyn went on to play senior volleyball with an extremely dedicated and hardworking group of women that called themselves the Kamloops Turbulence. They had no competition in the Kamloops area so they practiced and played against the men’s team.
This means they played on a higher net height for an extra challenge. In 1980, the Turbulence won the provincial championship in Vancouver.cIn this tournament, they defeated powerhouse teams from the Lower mainland and Vancouver Island that typically dominated.
They earned the right to represent BC at the Western Canadian Championship in Edmonton, which they won undefeated. This took them back to Vancouver to compete in the Canadian American (Can-Am) Pacific Northwest Tournament in Vancouver where they won the title. No Kamloops team since has ever had the same success as this group of ladies. So after 46 years, they were honoured for their success an inducted into the Kamloops Hall of Fame.
