There’s been much discussion about GLP-1 and Ozempic recently. But what is GLP-1? Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone produced by the small intestine that plays multiple roles in glucose regulation via GLP-1 receptors. This is why semaglutide medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy have gained popularity. Semaglutides are used primarily to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity. They mimic the action of GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release, reducing glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying, promoting a feeling of fullness. By acting as GLP-1 receptor agonists, semaglutides bind to and activate GLP-1 receptors, enhancing these effects and helping to lower blood sugar levels and support weight loss.
Certain conditions like PCOS and menopause can reduce the body’s insulin response, diminishing GLP-1 effectiveness. Obesity, lifestyle habits, and diet also significantly impact both genders. But there are ways to mitigate this through exercise, nutrition and even further, certain natural supplementation. Because GLP-1 triggers insulin release from the pancreas, helping the body use food for energy and lowering blood glucose levels, by eating the right foods, you can naturally stimulate its effects. Eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins promotes fullness. Research shows fiber stimulates GLP-1 release, reducing hunger and aiding weight loss. Natural aids like berberine, curcumin, ginseng, and certain bacterial strains can also support GLP-1. These are very natural ways to enhance GLP-1 effects. However, understanding the right amounts of these compounds and bacterial strains can be overwhelming. Specific natural products can help simplify this process.
I have worked in this industry for almost 30 years and helped countless people lose weight and keep it off through proper diet and exercise. However, certain life stages or conditions, as mentioned above, can make it a struggle where additional support can be helpful. But don’t think you can have one without the other; first and foremost are healthy lifestyle habits, which offer benefits beyond weight loss. Exercise provides numerous other benefits, including denser bones, improved mental health, better heart health, and more. Exercise also boosts GLP-1 activity through a process involving short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). In addition, proteins called myokines, released during exercise, play a crucial role in enhancing GLP-1 function.
