Now that September is almost over, many parents are in full swing with their children’s activities. Balancing the kids’ schedules, meals, and overall health while managing everything else can make it seem impossible to find time for yourself, let alone exercise. However, there are ways to incorporate fitness into your routine.
When my kids were involved in various activities, I found creative ways to fit in my workouts. For instance, while dropping them for longer activities as a sports practice or scouts, I would map out the area and go for a power walk or run. If I had to wait in a lobby because it was a shorter type activity as a music or art class, then I would focus on a resistance workout for the lower body with exercises like squats, static lunges, squat hops, and calf raises. During sporting events, if it was a game, I always wanted to watch of course, so I would bring a skipping rope and skip while watching. If I forgot my rope, I would find a corner where I could still watch and do either a resistance lower body workout and or a quick 20-minute aerobic workout, including high knees, jumping jacks, squat hops, fast feet, and football runs.
There are countless ways to get in a quick workout no matter where you are, whether by following the examples above or creating your own routine. Overcoming barriers is key—if you’re embarrassed, find a discreet corner. If you need to be quiet or less noticeable, consider a band workout. Resistance bands are great tools for quick, on-the-go resistance training, especially for the upper body. They’re lightweight and easy to carry. You can use your feet as an anchor to perform rows, bicep curls, triceps extensions, plus chest and shoulder presses.
For those who enjoy walking, jogging, or running but find the increasing darkness a barrier as the days get shorter, then try to get other parents on board. Many may want to do the same thing but are unsure how to start, and your suggestion could be just what they need.
By being creative and proactive, you can stay fit while keeping up with your busy schedule. These waiting times are a perfect opportunity to get a workout in!
