Amazing Cucumber Facts

How Does A Cucumber Become a Pickle?… It Goes Though A Jarring Experience!

Although it is too early to start Cucumber Plants because of their rapid germination, growth and dislike of being transplanted I found some interesting facts that may interest you in growing them.  They originated in India over 3000 years ago then spread to Europe first to Greece and Italy then to France in the 9th century then to England in the 14th century.  Christopher Columbus then took them to Haiti in 1494 and then were brought to Canada in 1535.   This delicious vegetable contains practically no calories but they do contain large amounts of Water, Vitamins, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium and Zinc.  Canada alone now produces over 2200 tons a year.   I will get into more of the aspects of successful growing of them in another article in the near future but these interesting facts I hope you will enjoy!

  • If you are feeling tired in the afternoon try eating a Cucumber as it is a source of vitamin B and carbohydrates it will give you that quick pick me up that will last for hours.
  • If you are tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower  rub Cucumber along the mirror.  It will stop the fogging and provide a soothing spa like fragrance.
  • If you have slugs in your flower or garden beds place a few slices of Cucumber in a pie tin and place it in the affected bed.  The Cucumber will react with the aluminum and give off a scent (not notable to humans) that will repel the pests.
  • To avoid a hangover or headache eat some Cucumber before going to bed, the water, sugar, and Electrolytes will replace essential nutrients and restore the bodies equilibrium.
  • To fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge slice and eat some Cucumber this is a satisfying, lo-calorie and inexpensive treat.
  • If your shoes need a polish rub fresh Cucumber over them, it will provide a quick and durable shine that will also repel water.
  • If you have a squeaky hinge in a door rubbing Cucumber over the offending hinge will get rid of the squeak.
  • A slice of Cucumber pressed to the roof of your mouth for 30 seconds will kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath.
  • If you rub Cumber onto faucets, sinks or stainless steel it will remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine.  It won’t leave streaks and is easy on the hands.
  • If you made a mistake with a pen or the kids have decorated your walls using crayons or markers use the peel of a Cucumber and slowly use it like an eraser.
  • To reduce stress cut up a Cucumber and put into boiling water.  The steam from this will create a soothing and relaxing aroma that will reduce that stress.

Happy Gardening!
