Time To Celebrate

Welcome to Colleen’s Corner. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road  or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc.  l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer:  The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Here are some facts for Canada Day; 

  • At one time this day was called Dominion Day. 
  • July 1, 1897 was the day that it became a statutory holiday. In 1982 Dominion Day was re-named to Canada Day.
  • Canada is from the Huron -Iroquois word of Kanata.
  • Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories.  The provinces are BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia. New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and PEI.
  • Our territories are North West Territories, the Yukon and Nunavut.
  • We are the second largest country around the globe.  Although compared to the USA our populations are so much smaller. Canada ‘s population is about 37.59 million, the states is about 328 million.
  • Russia is the largest country.
  • The three most popular sayings are Sorry and Eh!, and I am Canadian
  • Beer is a favourite to drink. During the Canada Day Long Weekend Canadians will drink about 1.2 million litres of beer. The favourite cocktail is Caesar.
  • We are good neighbours, Canada and the USA have the longest border which is undefended in the world.
  • We love animals so much that our national symbol is the Beaver.
  •  We have a great sense of humour, our coin money sounds like something from a cartoon, the Loonie,  (named after a duck) and the Toonie.
  • We have the longest coastline in the world, 151,600 miles (243,976 kms)
  •  Our famous coffee and doughnut place Tim Hortons is now all over the world.
  • We Have 2 official languages: English, and French.
  • Kraft Dinner is a Canadian classic, and there are about 7 million boxes of this comfort food sold around the globe. As Canadians we consume about 1.7 million boxes. It’s so popular that the Canadian Band the Bare-naked ladies sing about Kraft Dinner sing about it in their song If I had a Million Dollars( it’s a good fun song)
  • We have tons of  freshwater lakes
  • Hockey, Hockey, Hockey, we love this sport, after all we did create it.
  • We are so great we even have our own candy; our Chocolate bars are awesome, Caramilk, Coffee Crisp, Smarties (eat the red ones last) , Big Turk, Crunchie, Skor, and Dairy Milk.
