There are many things you can do to support healthy fascia without medical intervention. Because fascia is affected by inflammation, hydration, hormones, movement, collagen production, and the nervous system, taking a whole-body approach can be beneficial.
Start with gut health. When gut health is not optimal, inflammation can increase, and changes in the microbiome may affect connective tissue and fascia. Fascial restrictions can also impact digestion, motility, and gut–brain signalling. Work toward a balanced microbiome by eating plenty of fibre-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, along with healthy fats—especially those high in omega-3 fatty acids. An anti-inflammatory eating pattern may help reduce chronic inflammation throughout the body, including within fascial tissue.
Support collagen production. Collagen is a major component of fascia, and collagen production and quality can decline with age, particularly during the perimenopausal and menopausal years. Foods rich in collagen and glycine, such as bone broth, fish or chicken skin, and gelatine, may be beneficial, as can collagen supplements. These plus Vitamin C is also essential for collagen synthesis and connective tissue repair, helping support fascia’s strength and elasticity.
Don’t forget magnesium. Magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation and may help reduce myofascial tightness, muscle tension, and trigger-point discomfort.
Stay hydrated. Proper hydration is essential for healthy fascia. Dehydration can contribute to stiffened fascial tissue and affect the extracellular matrix, reducing the tissue’s ability to glide and move efficiently. Hydration helps support fascia’s elasticity and smooth movement between tissues.
Use heat and water. Warm baths and aquatic exercise can enhance circulation, reduce stiffness, and support connective tissue recovery.
Myofascial Release
Foam rolling and other forms of myofascial release can be beneficial for tight or restricted areas. This type of movement may help signal the nervous system to relax while temporarily increasing local blood flow and encouraging fluid movement through the tissues. Think of fascia somewhat like a sponge—compression and release may help move fluid through the tissue, supporting hydration and nutrient exchange.
This can be particularly beneficial during perimenopause and menopause, when changes in hormones and connective tissue can contribute to fascia becoming less hydrated and more restricted or “sticky.”
Focused breathing and breath work can also support fascial relaxation. Deep, controlled breathing improves oxygen delivery to tissues and helps regulate the autonomic nervous system—shifting the body away from the active “fight-or-flight” response and toward the calmer “rest-and-digest” state.
Check Your Thyroid and Hormones
Thyroid hormones play an important role in metabolism and tissue function. When thyroid function is low, processes such as collagen turnover can slow down—and remember, fascia is largely made up of collagen. If you are experiencing persistent stiffness, pain, fatigue, or unexplained changes in your body, it may be worth getting your thyroid checked.
Women during perimenopause and menopause may by told by their medical professional that Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be a good option, as the changes in connective tissue, hydration, stiffness, and pain as well as other factors are more pronounced in some women vs others during this transitional time.
Additional Therapies
Some people may benefit from therapies such as:
- Acupuncture
- Dry needling
- Trigger-point injections
- Massage therapy
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Connective tissue manipulation
These approaches may help modulate neuromuscular activity, reduce pain, improve circulation, and decrease feelings of fascial tightness.
Movement Is Medicine
Slow, mindful movement such as yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi can support fascial hydration, elasticity, tissue glide, posture, and balance.
Regular stretching, strengthening, and posture-focused exercise can also improve fascial alignment and function. Combining strength training with flexibility and mobility work helps improve overall tissue and joint mechanics while potentially reducing the risk of injury.
The key is consistency. Fascia responds to how we move, fuel, hydrate, recover, and manage stress. Supporting it from multiple angles can help keep the tissue healthy, resilient, and moving well—especially as we age and or move through hormonal transitions.
