Spring into Fun at the Seniors’ Drop-In

April was a shorter month for us at the seniors’ drop-in program because of the Easter long weekend, but we certainly stayed busy. We made sure to keep our bodies moving with a variety of physical activities, completed several creative crafts, and also hosted our annual Seniors Spring Fling.

This month, our physical activities included seated yoga, seated Zumba, and two fun group games—bean bag toss and balloon volleyball. Both yoga and Zumba continue to be very popular with the seniors. It is wonderful to see how regular movement and stretching can improve flexibility over time, allowing participants to move a little farther with each session. Zumba adds a faster pace and fun music, making exercise feel enjoyable. Bean bag toss encourages coordination and concentration, benefiting both body and mind. Balloon volleyball was another favourite, and it is safe to say everyone worked up a sweat as two teams laughed and competed while keeping the balloon in the air.

We also enjoyed a couple of fun and practical crafts this month. Each participant received a reusable tote bag along with paint and stencils to design a personalized bag to take home. With spring in the air, our second craft focused on the garden, as the seniors created beautiful butterfly garden stakes to brighten their outdoor spaces.

The highlight of the month was the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre’s annual Seniors Spring Fling. We invited a very entertaining magician from Kelowna to perform an amazing show for our seniors. Following the entertainment, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of beef smokies, potato salad, and fresh melon slices. We had a wonderful turnout, and it is safe to say everyone left both amazed and with full bellies.
