Since it’s the 2024 Summer Olympics, I thought it would be interesting to compare the running times of average individuals to those of Olympians/elite athletes in their respective events.
100 meters
- Female
- An average female: about 14 to 16 seconds, with a speed around 22.5-25.7 km/h.
- An elite female: in around 10.49 seconds, reaching speeds up to 34.27 km/h.
- Male
- An average male: about 13 to 14 seconds, with a speed around 25.7-27.7 km/h.
- An elite male: around 9.58 seconds, reaching speeds up to 37.58 km/h.
200 meters
- Female
- An average female: around 30 to 35 seconds, with a speed around 5.7-6.7 meters per second (m/s), which is about 20.5-24.1 km/h
- An elite female: around 21 to 22 seconds, with a speed 9.52-9.52 meters per second (m/s), which is about 34.27-34.27 km/h
- Male
- An average male: about 24 to 28 seconds, with a speed of around 25.7-30 km/h.
- An elite male: around 19.19 seconds, reaching speeds up to 37.5 km/h.
400 meters
- Female
- An average female: about 55 to 65 seconds, with a speed of around 22.14-26.17 km/h.
- An elite female: around 48.25 seconds, reaching speeds up to 29.84 km/h.
- Male
- An average male: about 45 to 55 seconds, with a speed of around 26.17-32 km/h.
- An elite male: around 43.03 seconds, reaching speeds up to 33.5 km/h.
800 meters
- Female
- An average female: about 2 to 2.5 minutes, with a speed of around 24-30 km/h.
- An elite female: around 1 minute and 53 seconds, reaching speeds up to 25.7 km/h.
1500 meters
- Female
- An average female: about 6 to 8 minutes, with a pace of about 4.8 to 5.7 minutes per kilometre.
- An elite female: around 3 minutes and 50 seconds, with a pace of about 2.5 minutes per kilometre.
- Male
- An average male: about 5 to 7 minutes, with a pace of about 4 to 5 minutes per kilometre.
- An elite male: around 3 minutes and 30 seconds, with a pace of about 2.3 minutes per kilometre.
10,000 meters (10klm)
- Female
- An average female: around 50 to 70 minutes to complete 10,000 meters, running at a pace of about 5 to 7 minutes per kilometre.
- An elite female: around 30 to 32 minutes, running at a pace of about 3 to 3.2 minutes per kilometre.
- Male
- An average male: around 45 to 60 minutes to complete 10,000 meters, running at a pace of about 4.5 to 6 minutes per kilometre.
- An elite male: around 26 to 28 minutes, running at a pace of about 2.6 to 2.8 minutes per kilometre.
Full Marathon
- Female
- An average female: around 4 to 5 hours to complete a full marathon, running at a pace of about 5.7 to 7.1 minutes per kilometre.
- An elite female: around 2 hours and 15 minutes to 2 hours and 20 minutes, running at a pace of about 3 to 3.3 minutes per kilometre.
- Male
- An average male: around 4 to 4.5 hours to complete a full marathon, running at a pace of about 5.7 to 6.4 minutes per kilometre.
- An elite male: around 2 hours and 5 minutes to 2 hours and 10 minutes, running at a pace of about 2.9 to 3.1 minutes per kilometre.
While these athletes achieve incredible feats, it’s equally important not to overlook our own accomplishments as individuals. Engaging in running is crucial for our health, and we can always strive to improve our personal bests and compete against our own achievements.
