Okanagan Artists of Canada Society Celebrates 10 Years of Empowering Local Youth Artists at VCAC

Each year, our club sponsors the VCAC Summer Youth Artists in Residence.

This year, there were 3 deserving students! Mayah, Magnus and Jacqueline. Each student received a $250 GC for the Vernon Community Arts Centre for art supplies from the OACS club. It’s our way of supporting the next generation of artists and celebrating our club motto, ‘Artists Helping Artists’.

We are celebrating our 10th Anniversary of supporting Youth in Residence at the Vernon Community Arts Centre

About the Program

The Youth Artist in Residence (YAR) program offers a unique opportunity for aspiring artists aged 16-18 in the North Okanagan to immerse themselves in the art world. This year, from July 2 to August 23, the Vernon Community Arts Centre is are thrilled to introduce not one, not two, but three youth artists to the program: Mayah, Magnus, and Jacqueline. YAR aims to enhance the confidence and skills of these young artists while deepening their connection to the local arts community.

These three artists will benefit from a one-year membership, dedicated studio spaces, mentorship from both artists and administrative staff, and full access to VCAC’s facilities and equipment. This immersive environment enables them to explore their creative processes, experiment with new media and techniques, collaborate with peers and professionals, and develop a portfolio for exhibition at the end of their residency.

About the Artists

Mayah Fawcett-Martselos, a recent graduate from W.L Seaton Secondary, explores emotional and social themes in her work, believing strongly in art’s ability to convey resilience and address societal issues. She aims to use this opportunity to expand her skills, discover new mediums, and enrich her portfolio.

Magnus Peacock, an Indigenous Two-Spirit artist, blends traditional Indigenous art with modern forms like beading and sweatshirts as well as hair accessories. They use their art to advocate for minority rights on social media, aiming to educate about past and ongoing injustices. Interested in exploring new mediums like clay, Magnus seeks connections with like-minded artists and community members to inspire collaboration.

Jacqueline Janek, a student at Charles Bloom Secondary entering grade 12 in the fall, draws inspiration from her Slovakian heritage and spirituality in her art. Her pieces focus on themes of tradition and nature, characterized by realism and intricate detail. Jacqueline’s dedication to artistic expression and cultural preservation is evident throughout her work.

Celebrating Artistic Growth

Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of Mayah, Magnus, and Jacqueline at their Gallery Exhibition, happening from August 22 to September 10. Don’t miss the Opening Reception on August 22 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Vernon Community Arts Centre, where you can experience the vibrant and diverse artistic expressions nurtured through the YAR program.
