The Lumby Historians, headed by Mrs. Rosemary Deuling, compiled and published the book ‘Grassroots of Lumby’ in 1979. A few copies are still available for purchase from the Lumby Museum. The book contains fascinating stories and photos of day-to-day life in the growing settlement. Our focus today is on weddings and how the brides’ dresses shown in the book reflect the changing nature of life in the village.

- On page 61 you’ll find a handsome photo of an elegant couple, Dick Smith and Margaret Inglis on their wedding day.
My 1877 cookbook lists the following recipe for a wedding cake: 5 pounds seeded raisins, 2 pounds currants, 1 pound citron, 12 eggs, 1 pound butter, 1 pound brown sugar, 1 coffee-cup molasses, a little brandy, and 1 tea-cup of spices.
Beverage: Champagne Cup; 1 quart bottle of champagne, 2 bottles soda water, 1 liqueur glass of brandy, 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar, fresh thin strips of cucumber rind. Make just in time for use, adding 1 large piece of ice.
