Moments in Time – Photos & Memories from the Lumby Museum – Pat Duke- March 3, 2023

Pat Duke

At one time, White pine logs harvested in the Lumby area were said to be the best in the world. This photo of Pat Duke’s logging truck shows a record load of 32’ White pine logs measuring approximately 5600 cubic metres which came out of Ryder Creek. White pine is straight-grained and easily ignited, making it ideal for the manufacture of wooden matches.  Many loads of “match blocks” were shipped from Lumby to a match book factory in Nelson, BC.  N.R. “Pat” Duke (1908-1991) served as Lumby’s mayor for 28 years.
