Moments in Time – Photos & Memories from the Lumby Museum – Maurice Miles – May 12, 2023

The biggest flood in Lumby occurred in May 1948 when Bessette Creek flooded so badly Maurice Miles’s root cellar was under 2 feet of water.  Maurice came to Lumby in 1940 and lived in a house where the curling rink is today.  Maurice was a quiet man who got things done – he was he first to implement coffee breaks for the men at Lumby Timber.   He was instrumental in starting the Farm Union in the province.  As President of the Community Club, he made sure Village needs were looked after until the Village was incorporated in 1955.  In 1948, Maurice moved his family to a farm on Rawlings Lake Road where his crop of dry land alpha hay was voted best in the Okanagan Valley.   Maurice and wife Irene had two children: Mrs. Merle Newbery and Mrs. Kathy Gutzke.
