Last words about our Lumby Flying Frenchmen hockey team: for many years, water for the team was a wine bottle wrapped in hockey tape. One night in Golden, the water bottle went missing – replaced by a full magnum of wine that was somehow polished off before the game even started. In fact, some Frenchmen were tossed from the game because they couldn’t stand up on their skates! And then there was the night the Lumby fans were so rambunctious they were escorted out of town by the RCMP before the game was finished. And what about the night the team ran out of milk for their Tia Maria’s and stopped at D Dutchmen Dairy in Sicamous to fill a coke bottle with fresh milk from a sleepy cow!

The Frenchmen were a feared and respected team in the Monashee Hockey League but in 1977, the final chapter of the Lumby Flying Frenchmen was written as there were not enough competitive players to form a team.
