Sponsored by his grandfather Lew Chow, Yick Man Lew came to Lumby in 1951 to escape the Sino-Japanese War. He was quick to learn the English language and was soon using English words most of us have never heard of let alone practice in our daily life! Yick Man went to work for Lumby Timber where he soon advanced to the position of head sawyer. He married BoHar Lam in Hong Kong and together they raised 3 children: Linda, William and Charles. Yick Man fell ill in the spring of 1975, and although not well enough to do so, Yick Man’s work ethic meant he continued to work for the company he loved until his illness forced hospitalization. On the sixteenth of August, 1976, Yick Man Lew suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away. It was one day before his 45th birthday.
