Back in the 1930’s, when Lumby temperatures reached a cool minus 40 or 50, Lumby’s first baker, George Edward Dooley would head out to Harris Creek to cut ice blocks with a cross cut saw. Back at the bakery, the ice blocks were buried in sawdust, waiting for the summer months when George would make ice cream. Sam Derry supplied the rich butterfat cream – George mixed in the crushed ice and began churning the mixture. While exact figures are not known, it is believed a single scoop of ice cream would cost 5 cents!
George came to Lumby around 1915. Along with his wife Annie, they would raise 2 children: Jennie and George. George closed his bakery in 1948 and moved to Hedley.
