Verle Moore (nee Martin) (1895-1992) arrived in Lumby in 1940 and taught at Lumby Elementary until her retirement in 1960. Her classroom was filled with birds, animals, a sandbox and always plants – anything to help her students to learn. She married Tom Moore in 1917 and two sons were born: Terry and Tom. Verle taught adults to paint and formed the Lumby Art Group. She was a volunteer for many “firsts” in Lumby, including the curling rink and golf course. Many of her paintings and household artifacts are preserved at the Lumby Museum.
