In May 1977 a 2 acre swamp, formerly part of MacGillis and Gibbs pole yard, was purchased by the Village and given to the Royals Ball team to develop a ball park. With the help of volunteers, donated materials and the help of Wally Chaput’s cat, Ohashi’s loader, Merslak and Hanna’s gravel trucks, the swamp was turned into a useful piece of land. Van Kupser, using the Department of Highways grader, leveled the area and the Royals laid 33,000 square feet of turf in one day! Fourteen lights with 76,000 candle power per light were mounted on 6-60′ poles donated by MacGillis and Gibbs.
On Sept. 1, 1979, the Lumby Royals ball team’s dream became a reality. The Grand Opening of the 1979 BC Provincial Fastball Championships was held at Royals Park.
