In 1991, Vern (1942-2020) and Don Bigelow’s “Paint your Life with Sunshine Sweepstakes” caused quite a stir in Lumby. The Irly Bird store became a tropical oasis and shoppers were impressed with the hard work and creativity the staff put into the event. Up for grabs was a 7-day trip to Palm Springs and 3-day trip to Disneyland including deluxe accommodation, car rental and $500.00 spending money. No one remembers who won but we are sure it was a fantastic vacation. Vern and Don would later sell the business to Gord Catt, Andrew Sherman and Bill White in 1998.
