In July 1976, the newly formed Lumby Air Force hosted the Lumby Kite Flying Competition that saw pilot Miles Hopkins from Kelowna take away the top prize of $300.00.  The flyers tested their skills from the Saddle Mountain launch – about 1200 above ground.  Chief Judge was Randy Rauck; Pre-flight judge was Chris Bennett, Dennis Gatzke was the starter, Leo Salvas was the complaint department and Cindy Gatzke, Donna Patrick, Shannon Shearer and Carol Luchak worked the registration desk.  Next year will mark 50 years of hang gliding competition in Lumby.
