The Lumby Lightning Swim Club wrapped up another exciting and action-packed Challenge Week, giving swimmers of all ages the opportunity to challenge themselves both in and out of the pool while building friendships and lasting memories.
The week began on Monday with swimmers meeting their fellow shipmates, designing pirate flags, creating team cheers, and celebrating at opening ceremonies before regular swim practice. That evening, members enjoyed an introduction to disc golf hosted by the Lumby Disc Golf Club, followed by a potluck BBQ.
Tuesday featured the club’s annual endurance events at Oval Park. Intermediate and Senior swimmers completed a mini triathlon consisting of a 1,000-metre swim, approximately 7 kilometres of cycling, and a 4-kilometre run. Junior swimmers participated in a mini biathlon with the biking and running portions of the event. A pancake breakfast was a well-earned reward before swimmers returned to the pool for afternoon practice.
Wednesday morning saw 46 swimmers hike to the summit of Bluenose Mountain, taking advantage of beautiful weather before returning for evening swim training.
On Thursday, Senior and Intermediate swimmers began the day with morning lap swim before taking on the Cop Hill Challenge, where they were joined by the Junior swimmers. Athletes had 45 minutes to complete as many climbs as possible between the police station and Catt Avenue. Thursday evening wrapped up with a fun game of Swim Monopoly in the pool.
Friday’s finale brought the entire club together for a 9.9-kilometre bike ride along the Okanagan Rail Trail from Kekuli Bay to Oyama Station Beach. Younger swimmers enjoyed beach activities while 23 athletes completed a challenging 2-kilometre open water swim before cycling back to Kekuli Bay. The week concluded with the club’s Mini Meet, a pizza party, closing ceremonies, and the presentation of Challenge Week awards.
Challenge Week is about much more than competition. Throughout the week, swimmers pushed their limits, built confidence, strengthened friendships, and learned the value of teamwork while creating memories that will last a lifetime.
The Lumby Lightning Swim Club extends a sincere thank you to its dedicated coaches, volunteers, board members, parents, and community supporters who made the week possible.
The excitement continued over the weekend as a record 40 Lumby Lightning swimmers travelled to Kelowna for the Ogopogo Swim Meet. Many athletes competed in their first meet of the season, achieving personal bests and gaining valuable racing experience. The club delivered an outstanding performance, finishing second overall in the points aggregate among 12 competing clubs.
Congratulations to our individual aggregate winners: Gwen Goldie, Morgan Andretta, Wesley Wynsouw, Chantelle Rajotte, and Jack Savage, whose outstanding performances helped lead the Lightning to a successful weekend.
The Lumby Lightning Swim Club continues to grow and thrive. There is still time to purchase tickets for the club’s Flash & Splash Raffle, with the draw taking place this Friday evening at the Lumby Pool. The club will also be hosting the weekly Meat Draw at the Lumby Legion on Saturday and welcomes the community to come out and support both the Legion and the Lumby Lightning Swim Club.
