London Bridge Is Alive And Well In Arizona

Welcome to Colleen’s Corner. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road  or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc.  l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer:  The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

The original London Bridge was started by designer John Rennie in 1925 over the river Thames in London England. John didn’t live long enough to complete it instead his son finished the work.

The Bridge had been completed and opened August 31 1831.

By the time 1962 rolled around the Bridge had started to slowly come apart. You know the song “London Bridge is falling down,  falling down “. It was true there was so much traffic that the Bridge couldn’t handle the weight. So London authorities put the Bridge up for sale.

In 1968 Robert P.McColloch bought London Bridge, bringing only the exterior granite blocks from the Bridge and adding on to it Robert started to build the Bridge in Lake Havasu Arizona. The completion of the Bridge was done October 10 1971. The total length is 930 feet and the longest span is 150 feet.

Every year the day after the American Thanksgiving (this year it was November 23 2023) in Lake Havasu City Arizona they do a fantastic light up of the bridge for their Christmas decorations. I was lucky enough to be here at that time. Some friends of ours are here and Tim and I went out for dinner with them at a restaurant right above where the light up was.

It was like NEW Years Eve where they do  the countdown it was awesome. People were on their boats or near the bridge it was a big party. I recommend if you are in Arizona around their Thanksgiving be sure to go to Lake Havasu the day after to see the London Bridge light up you will be amazed.
