Jumping From a Tree

Welcome to Colleen’s Corner. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road  or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc.  l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer:  The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Have you noticed that there seems to be more squirrels around this year? Someone told me they had six in their yard this year eating their apples.

So far I have only seen the one in my yard. I think it might be a male, but I’m not sure. I just call it Rascal. Rascal has been hanging around my yard since early August. I see it running across the fence that joins my neighbour’s and my yard. Obviously Rascal has a place nearby.

One day I was looking out my door at Rascal, he thought he should entertain me. Rascal jumped from my roof and landed on the tree branches, and then turned to look at me as if to say “look at me, see what I can do?” Rascal was correct, he did entertain me. I was quite amused by his antics. After that he would run over to the fence where I could still see him and find something to nibble on, then do yoga poses.

Then one day I didn’t see him outside, but heard something run in the attic. As I stood by the doorway there he was coming out of a small hole near the roof.

“Oh, Oh” I thought, “we need to fix that.”  So when Tim came home from work, I let him know that Rascal had found a way in.

So the other day Tim was doing some work outside, and started to patch up the hole, Rascal was sitting on the fence chattering at Tim. Not really knowing Squirrel language this is what we think he Rascal might be saying “Hey buddy, why are you covering up that hole? Don’t you know I want to go in there and play then sleep when it gets cold outside? “Possibly even invite my friends and family over to stay for the winter.” Our answer to that is “As cute as you are, we don’t mind that you run across the fences, jump from the roof to the tree, or jump from the tree to the ground. You do amuse us, but sorry there is just no room in our house or attic for you and your friends.”

I don’t think Rascal was pleased about this too much, as he kind of went away in a huff, and we haven’t seen him for a couple of days, although I am sure he will be back.

Squirrels can be cute from a distance, but you don’t want them in your house, attic, basement, or anywhere else inside they can destroy a lot of your property, which could be very costly to you in the end.
