In Like A Lion…. Out Like A Lamb

How Do You Plant A Kiss In Spring? With Two Lips!

This traditional weather proverb was initially written by an English writer by the name of Thomas Fuller in the 18th century. March which often starts cold and stormy (the Lion) and ends milder and calmer (the Lamb) is its foundation. It also is based on Astrological references as Leo the Lion and Aries the Lamb are visible in the night sky during this month. It is a variable weather prediction and this year it’s difficult to say whether it Lion or Lamb.

It certainly was a shock last weekend to wake up to the amount of snow that fell overnight. It’s the most snow that we received all winter. I believe it to be my fault as I was bragging to relatives in Ontario about having to only use my snow blower twice this winter while their weather has been a Lion all winter.

On top of this the snowfall caused a disconnect of the finer optic line that is singular to my home to be disconnected leaving my house without TV, Computer, and home phone for a week. All now fixed by a wonderful young linesman from Telus.

Now that I have my connections back I’ve been considering this Lion Lamb conundrum and I figure we’ve had it pretty good.

Yes we have had some significant wind events but nothing like the wind storms in in the Gaza Strip that blew sand by the ton on refugee camps. Small power outages seem insignificant to the power outage in Cuba that has affected 10 million people and will not be resolved anytime soon. The Atmospheric River that is hitting the coast has caused significant damage again both flooding and landslides but pales to the same system hitting Hawaii that has forced over Five Thousand people to evacuate their homes due to flooding, landslides and the imminent threat of a major dam failure. These people were told to get out immediately without taking time to pack anything. Mother Nature Rules!

According to the weather channels that I monitor we will have decent weather till the end of the month with a little rain and ever increasing daytime temperatures.

I went to Vernon this week to attend the Home and Garden Show and was amazed at the signs of spring on the way in. The hillsides have really greened up now that the snow has melted. Trees like the Willow are showing signs of life and some farmers are out prepping their land for planting. Other trees and early flowers are either growing well or showing some small signs of life.

I’ve also noticed the arrival of a few more bird varieties including some Robins. Ive also noticed that some insects have come out of their winter sleep some like the Fly and the Stink Bug I would rather not see but also our friend the Lady Bug. I’ve even seen some Bees out and about. The Home and Garden show really didn’t have too much in the way of Garden suggestions but there was a booth with plants in clear vases and containers that were quite beautiful.

I have recently been told by several people that live in the Village of Lumby that rats have been an increasing plaque. I haven’t seen any out here on Albers Road for some time but that will change I’m sure. I will be covering this next week as their are quite a few things you can do to protect your home from this ever increasing problem and take care of them you should as they can cause significant damage to your home and garden.

Happy Gardening!
