In Like A Lion Out Like A Lamb

What Did The Tree Say When It Saw The First Signs Of Spring?…..…What A Re – Leaf!

It’s Sunday evening, the power has gone out and the wind is blowing more furiously than I can remember it ever blowing, there will be a real mess to clean up after this.  Thank heaven it isn’t as cold as it is predicted to get as I have a lot of seeds just sprouting.  Hopefully BC Hydro will fix this outage quickly.  I always phone Hydro to report an outage and get updates.  The very pleasant woman that I spoke to informed me that over1600 households in this area were without power and that this wind and other outages stretch from Vancouver Island to the Columbia area as well as up to Salmon Arm and further south than Kelowna.  I am so grateful for the linemen who will get into those buckets and play with electric line that is whipping around in the wind.  I myself am not fond of the wind, don’t do ladders and electricity scares the heck out of me.

There is the promised snowfall that is accumulating in the mountains already, in the valley’s and lower ranges should be blessed with a good amount as well.  The temperature is supposed to drop a bit over the next few days while this moisture falls  I will be delighted to get out and blow it off my paths and roads.  I can’t believe how much  it felt like Spring on Saturday and when the sun hit the greenhouse the last few days it reached almost 30 degrees although not for long as the angle is still off and although the days are getting longer ( 3 minutes per day) it still cools off too early.

Not much is happening other that watching the seeds I’ve planted start to sprout.  I will be starting some Tomatoes this coming week and a few other seeds like Peppers, Marigolds and such.  Much too early for any Squash, Pumpkin and Cucumbers yet as they both sprout and grow too quickly.  If you have some seedlings up be sure to place them in a sunny window be sure to rotate the tray to help them grow straight.  The use of a fan is advisable as well at this time to promote strength in the stem but keep it gentle as they are fragile.

While wandering around the yard this last week I have found that Daffodils along the house are showing and that several trees are showing some buds.  If you haven’t done the pruning of your fruit trees yet you shouldn’t leave it for much longer as you don’t want to have the sap flowing in the limbs when you do it.  I also heard from a friend that the Pussy Willows are starting to come out.  Spring is coming!  I’m sure many of you are patiently awaiting it too.

The expression In like a Lion and out like a Lamb comes from an ancestral belief that relates to balance.  It is also is based on the Zodiac because the sign of Leo (the lion) is rising at this time where as by April the sign of the Ram is.  This late in February and by the weather we are receiving this seems to be the our fate this year.

Happy Gardening!
