Gardening Requires Lots Of Water… Most Of It In The Form Of Perspiration!
Having watched the opening of the President Obama Centre in Chicago last week I am awed to see an a true example of a great man. I was humbled by his speech that was positive in content, inspiring in nature with no words or anger or hatred. Unlike the present President that along with his ego has no sense of national or world pride and spews only hatred and contempt for everyone. It stands to reason that the memorandum of understanding would last as little as a day when there was no understanding at all. The Irani’s have him over a barrel and know it a mistake of shall we say Biblical proportions and in Trumps anger and frustration all he can manage is to threaten them again. Now of course along with the mess he’s created in that department the messes he’s created and the waste of money he has inflicted on the once great economy and country of America are being exposed. Contracts to good wealthy buddies of his have cost more and failed miserably to meet their objective like the once iconic Reflection Pool that millions of tourist go to see is now a sea of algae and peeling plastic that probably smells ripe too. His fancy new Presidential Airplane, New Ballroom and his entire Oval Office plated in Gold to mention a few. It will be interesting to know what the story of this presidency will read like in history. Hopefully short and sweet! Or none at all!
This week has shown us a little of the hot weather that the Okanagan is famous for in the summer. Although the temperatures have been hotter they do not match the highs that are usual for this time of year. Which is good. The weather predicted for the next little while seems to indicate cooler and wetter weather that usual which is good. The relentless winds over the last week make me nervous and any fire that starts up with that wind could get out of control quickly. I guess we should not complain as a Tornado warning was issued for Prince George this last week. Now Lytton is in flames again and again people are being evacuated. It is hard to believe that an area on the West Coast can be drier and hotter that the Interior. Everyone be alert and cautious. Tourists will be arriving in droves to our summer Mecca and we all need to take care to preserve it. The smallest mistake can have great consequences for all.
Needless to say there are actions one can implement to reduce the danger of wildfire damage to our homes. When planting your landscaping keep shrubs and hedges away from the house and refrain even then from using Cedar as it is rich in oil and will burn long and hot if ignited. Replace or initially install metal fencing around your home as this does not burn at all. Keep eaves troughs clear of debris and replace wood chips and other burnable landscaping mulch from around your home. Recheck or replace fire extinguishers in your home and if you can put one in your vehicle. You never know when one can come in handy. Be on the look out for potential trouble. The Municipal City Office and the local Fire Department carry a lot of information on how to protect your home and neighbouring area, your rights and responsibility should fire come to your area.
