Fun Food Facts

  1. Mangos are the most consumed fruit in the world.
1 cup of sliced mangos provides 100 calories with 3 grams of fiber and 100% of your daily vitamin C needs. It is also a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin A, and folate.
  2. Bell Peppers have more vitamin C than mangos.
1 cup of chopped green bell pepper contains about the same vitamin C as 1 mango, whereas red and particularly yellow can contain up to nearly 3x more vitamin C. Red peppers are also a great source of vitamin A.
  3. The liquid part of yogurt that sometimes separates on top, the whey, contains important nutrients such as calcium, potassium, and protein.
    Don’t drain it, mix it!
  4. Low in iron?  Cook in a cast iron skillet, you get the added iron into to your meal.
This is very helpful for vegans, vegetarians, and those deficient in iron.
  5. Increase your fiber and avoid certain foods to reduce the risk of colon cancer.
Don’t make red and processed meats as well as added sugars the main part of your diet, as this may increase the risk of colon and rectal cancer. But do make fiber an important part of your daily diet as this reduces the risks.  Men should aim for 35grams/day and women 25grams/day.
  6. Add Avocados to your salads.
They contain healthy fats, specifically a very particular fatty acid called oleic acid, which reduces inflammation and reduces the risk of breast cancer.  Also, when added to salads it helps better absorb carotenoids, antioxidants found in salad veggies such as spinach and carrots. AND, they are high in fiber, ¼ of an avocado has 3.5 grams of fiber
  7. Certain veggies have higher protein than others!
1 cup of cooked spinach has 5 grams of protein and 1 cup of cooked broccoli has 4 grams of protein.
  8. It is important to eat within 1 hour after an intense workout, to refuel with fluids, electrolytes, carbohydrates and protein. Here are few great mixes that will fulfill these needs:
Smoothie made with yogurt and frozen berries or graham crackers with peanut butter, low fat chocolate milk, and banana.
  9. An almond is actually a stone fruit!
Other stone fruits are peaches, plums, apricots, and cherries.  The stone-hard covering found around the single large seed at the fruit’s core, is why they are called this. Almonds on the tree look like small hard green peaches. Culinary experts often pair almonds with these other stone fruits as they have a slight almond flavour within them.
  10. Most wasabi is just horseradish that’s dyed green
Real authentic wasabi is difficult to grow, is very expensive, and should be consumed within 15 minutes of being grated. Since horseradish has a similar flavour profile and is far easier to cultivate, it is used in place of wasabi.
  11. Pineapples can take 2-3 years to grow and have some great health benefits.
It is a very long process, so please make sure not to waste your pineapple it had a long journey.  They also contain bromelain which is an enzyme that can help with relieving sinus problems, to reducing inflammation and improving digestion.
  12. Don’t let your pets eat raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts or chocolate, particularly dark chocolate.
Eating fairly large amounts of raisins and grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs. Macadamia nuts and chocolate can cause vomiting, upset stomach and other symptoms.
