Fall is in full swing and winter is going to be sneaking in soon, so is cold and flu season. It is important to be prepared and protect yourself to help reduce the spread. A flu, also referred to as influenza, can be more harmful to seniors as their immune system can be lowered and there may be other medical conditions. Influenzas can also hang around longer with seniors; lasting a few days to a few weeks.
There are some things that can be done to help prepare you for flu season.
- Wear a mask if you are feeling unwell to reduce the spread of germs.
- Wipe high touch surfaces as germs can live up to 48 hours on a surface.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after touching your nose, mouth and eyes.
- Stock medicine cabinet with a few things – cold and flu medication, cough syrup, cough lozenges and whatever you like to take when you’re sick.
- If you are feeling sick, please stay home.
Signs and symptoms of the seasonal flu vary from person to person but usually include a combination of:
- Fever
- Chest discomfort
- Coughing
- Sore throat
- Muscle aches and pains
- Runny, stuffy nose
- Headache
- Tiredness and feeling weak
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can also occur.
If you are feeling unwell drink plenty of fluids and rest, so your body can do the work to heal and fight the flu.
The flu and COVID have similar symptoms and COVID is still doing the rounds; tests are still available to pharmacies at no cost.
If you choose to get a flu shot, they are now available at pharmacies and there are some upcoming flu clinics in Lumby and Cherryville.
