It is easy to become less active as the weather gets colder but it is important to remember that regular physical activity is crucial, especially as we age. Movement helps seniors maintain healthy muscle mass and bone density; these are huge factors in preventing falls. It also reduces the risks of cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure. Arthritic pain is aggravated by the chilly winter months but movement and exercise can assist in lubricating joints and therefore, decreasing pain. Studies have shown that regular exercise can also combat anxiety, stress, and depression.
There are so many activities that can be done in your own home to keep your body limber and busy. Consider finding level appropriate workout videos such as yoga, Zumba, tai chi, or turning up some favourite music to dance along to. Believe it or not, even housework can be a good way to keep moving.
We are fortunate to live in a Village with many choices of beautiful walking areas and we are close to a city center with more recreation possibilities. Several of our local organizations facilitate exercise opportunities for seniors with a chance to socialize while being active so why not join a community yoga class, walking group or tai chi class?
