Cycling Without Age

Bringing Joy and Connection to Seniors in Lumby

Cycling Without Age is a global movement that connects seniors with their communities through the simple joy of a bike ride. Founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2012 by Ole Kassow, the initiative started with one man’s desire to help seniors feel the freedom of cycling again. Today, the movement operates in over fifty countries, offering free trishaw rides to senior passengers with the help of volunteer cyclists known as “pilots.”

The specially designed trishaws have a passenger seat at the front for two people, allowing seniors to enjoy the ride while engaging in conversation, laughter, and storytelling. These rides are slow, social, and scenic — focusing not just on transportation, but on human connection. The bikes are pedal assist and are easy, and fun to pilot.

Cycling Without Age is built on five core principles: Generosity, Slowness, Storytelling, Relationships. Together, these values promote inclusion, dignity, and meaningful intergenerational bonds.

The benefits are profound for seniors, these rides offer emotional uplift, reduce loneliness, and bring back cherished memories. Being outdoors also supports physical and mental well-being. For volunteers, the experience is deeply rewarding, offering a sense of purpose and the joy of building relationships with older adults.

We are very fortunate in Lumby to have this program, which is in its third season this year. This program is the legacy project that Wendy Gilbert made come to reality as a long-time employee and Past Executive Director of Whilevalley Community Resource Centre. Rides are free to seniors in our community, which take place on the picturesque Salmon Trail and area.

If you are a senior or have a senior in your life that would benefit and enjoy this program, please reach out to book a ride with Whitevalley Community Resource Centre at (250) 547-8866 or email sarahh@whitevalley.ca
