Crap Grass

A Weed Is A Plant That Has Mastered Every Survival Skill Except For Learning To Grow In Rows!

It has been a busy week here and around the world. I have recently been pricing out a few head of cattle and cannot believe the rise in price. Beef will be a very expensive food in the near future and that is thanks to the state of the world to which Trump has led us. The effects which we and people around the world will be feeling for years. I’m glad our government is taking steps that will over time will make us independent and strong!

The weather is now very pleasant except for the nights that are still a little cool. We still are trapping a few mice a day which we feed to a Raven that has been around for a couple of years, she loves to let us know she is here and several neighbours are all on her shopping stores.

Pollen from the trees is becoming an issue, so people with allergies should take care. The weather is certainly not as cool as Alberta and Saskatchewan with their recent snow falls (I would be in tears) Temperatures over the next week remain the same with a little rain to green things up.

I saw my first wasp in the greenhouse so I am actively looking for a nest and then the war is on. I have also seen a few humming birds one of my favourite spring and summer treats!

Also I have been pulling the inevitable Crab Grass which of course I have renamed as you well know. Crab Grass first will appear in you grassy areas and if not mowed or kept in check will develop seed heads containing 150,000 seeds each. It also spreads by its root shoots that seem to be down several feet and every piece is a possible plant making it a formidable, invasive plant.

To tackle this plant one needs more than to religiously pull it out and it needs help and there is help in an organic treatment that I am trying this year. My lawn is not my priority but when the Crab Grass invades my garden and flower beds some decisive action is needed. Even when it starts growing in flower pots it will circulate around the pot till it needs to be dumped and restarted.

Maintaining the lawn is a must and I intend to dedicate more time to that but one thing that you can do is apply Corn Gluten Meal with a Nitrogen fertilizer that you can easily apply. This should be done early spring around the time the Forsythia which is happening now and an average daytime temperature of at least 60 degrees. We have applied this to our lawn and I will inform you of my success.

Meanwhile things are growing well in the greenhouse and a massive transplanting is underway. Peas are up and Radishes are planted and I’ve found that a watched plant does not grow any faster! But its always a joy to see the progress.

It is still too early to plant beans ,if the soil temperature is not 60 degrees the seeds will just rot in the ground. I am planting cucumber, squash and several other fast germinating and fast growing seed this week

Happy Gardening!
